FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PROGRESSIVE PARTNERS!!!
What is it?
An OSM program attendance incentive program.
Who is it for?
ANY YOUTH WHO PARTICIPATES AT OSM ACTIVITIES - YOU NEED NOT BE A SCOUT - OSM IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH GIRL SCOUTS, BOY SCOUTS OR CAMPFIRE!
When is it?
Progressively through the calendar year - with BIG party & special incentives in January the following year!
How do I do it?
Attend OSM events.
Check in at every event you attend
At the first event you attend January to June, you will be given a bead necklace. Bring your bead necklace to EVERY event to get more beads - you will only get one necklace, if you lose it, we won’t replace it - if you don’t bring it, no beads for that event
Have fun!
Learn "new" things!
Come to subsequent events and do all of the above!
What do I get?
You’ll have fun.
You’ll learn new things.
If you attend at least four of the six activities planned for the calendar year, you will get a personal invitation to the BIG PARTY with special awards in January the following year!
What are special awards?
Every child who attends at least four (4) of the six activities on this brochure, offered by OSM during the calendar year, will be invited to a special awards party. At the party we will have games, crafts, food and awards. Each child will receive a SPECIAL PATCH. ONLY those fulfilling the program will get one. If you attend more than four (4) of the year’s programs, you will get additional awards. Please note, the program is based upon 6 programs to be offered.
THE FIRST THING YOU WILL LEARN IS RESPONSIBILITY - IT WILL BE YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BE SURE YOU ARE "CHECKED IN" WITH OUR STAFFER AND TO BRING YOUR NECKLACE TO ALL EVENTS YOU ATTEND!! Look for the CHECK IN table at ALL OSM activities!!!! We will use the check in rosters as the basis for the Party Invitation Guest List.
ADULTS PLEASE NOTE:
The award program is also offered to adults who are willing to "help" with events. When you attend with your child, it is expected that you will help - at least with your own child. Generally, we do not operate "drop off" youth activities - adults are anticipated to attend with their children. We consider it a good thing to spend time with your children. So, see the CHECK-IN STAFFER and get "checked in"!
IMPORTANT TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND: PLEASE NOTE: WE WILL NOT ACCEPT PHONE RESERVATIONS FOR PAID ACTIVITIES. YOU MUST SUBMIT YOUR FEE AND REGISTRATION FORM TO BE ACTUALLY REGISTERED. All activity registrations are accepted on the basis that refunds will only be made if the EVENT is canceled. If you fail to attend after registering, your registration fee will be viewed as a donation to the operation of the museum. Neither will we provide program materials for non-attendees. Questions may be directed to the Mollie Perrot at the museum - 815/431-9353 or via e-mail to scouter07@hotmail.com.

2008 OSM FOUNDER'S WEEKEND
OTTAWA SCOUTING MUSEUM
W. D. BOYCE
This year honoring Juliette Gordon Low
Girl Scouts of America
June 13-15, 2008
Ottawa, Illinois
2008 OSM FOUNDER'S WEEKEND
The weekend of June 13-15, 2008 marks the 17th annual Founder's weekend to honor W. D. Boyce, one of the founders of scouting. Ottawa was the home of W. D. Boyce and is also his final resting place. Join us for a weekend of varied activities including camping, hiking, fun, games, crafts, etc.
HISTORY OF SCOUTING COLLECTORS PATCHES
The year 2008 also marks the 98th anniversary of W. D. Boyce‚s incorporation of the Boy Scouts of America. The Ottawa Scouting Museum announces a "COUNTDOWN TO THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY" of the incorporation of BSA. Starting in 2002, we will issue a different, fully embroidered collectors patch each year until 2010. When fully assembled, this collection of patches will present a pictorial history of all scouting. This completed patch will be over 14" in diameter - and truly a collectors dream. Come along with us on this historic journey - find out how the early founders of the scouting movement knew one another personally and professionally! It‚s one of history‚s most interesting tales! The seventh patch in this series will honor Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts of America. Girl Scouting began in Atlanta, Georgia in 1912 and was modeled after the Girl Guides founded by Lady Baden Powell in England. Travel along this historic journey with us - begin your patch collection today!
CAMPING
Limited camping space is available this year at Friendship Village, directly off Route 23, about 2 miles south of Ottawa, in two formats, family camping(cub scout age families Friday night only) and troop camping (Friday & Saturday nights( boy scouts/ girl scouts), and will be offered on a first come, first served basis. After our camping area at Friendship Village is full, you will have to find your own camping in the area. We suggest you REGISTER EARLY!) Bring water and containers and garbage bags for the weekend. All cooking fires off the ground. No campfires unless authorized by the Founder's Day Weekend Committee. All family campsites must be vacated by 9 a.m. on Saturday; troops and post campsites must be vacated by Sunday at 10 a.m. With the number of campers participating and exposure to the public, good Scouting and camping practices must be observed by all. PLEASE NOTE: there are no provisions for campers or motor homes at Friendship Village. ALSO NOTE: this is a private facility and we only have use of it for Friday thru Sunday - we are not permitted in before Friday nor can we stay after Sunday. Sorry if this is an inconvenience for anyone. If you prefer other camping arrangements, you might try Starved Rock State Park , which is very close. Their phone number is 815/667-4726. They will fill up fast so make your reservation EARLY with them if you want to camp there.
REGISTRATION CHECK IN
PLEASE: register as you intend to check in! For instance, if you are arriving as a group and all at the same time, then register as a group. If a group intends to all come, but are arriving individually and at different times, PLEASE register individually. Registration packets will be made up as the registration is received and we cannot take one registration out of a packet of 20 registrants. Regardless of when you arrive for the weekend, your first item of business is to register for the weekend, or pick up your registration packet if you pre-registered. Campers arriving on Friday evening should check in at the Registration Table in the shelter at Friendship Village. Linda will have your packets tickets, etc. ready for you if you have pre-registered. If you arrive on Saturday, pick up and/or register at the Masonic Temple, on the east side of Washington Park, downtown Ottawa. Registrants for Founder‚s Weekend activities will receive a complimentary ticket to visit the Ottawa Scouting Museum at 1100 Canal Street in Ottawa. Other interested persons may purchase tickets at a reduced rate on Saturday at the museum.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Registration fees for campers for the weekend will be available in these formats: $6.00 each for family camper (includes Founder‚s Weekend Patch, Friday evening program and Saturday activities). A fee of $7.00 each for troop/post camper (includes two nights camping, Founder's Weekend Patch and participation in the Saturday night Cook-Off (see below). On Saturday evening at Friendship Village campgrounds, OSM will host its sixth Scout Recipe Cook-Off Competition! Participants should indicate upon check-in that they desire to participate. All recipes are to be prepared ON SITE (judges will visit each campsite) and submitted in writing to the judges (these recipes will be used in a cook book OSM is preparing and submission of the recipe gives OSM permission to use it in this fashion). Preparation of the recipe should be completed in time for the judging which will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday night. This is a DUTCH OVEN cooking contest! Prizes will be awarded after the judging is final. Categories: best dutch oven dessert, best dutch oven meal. The OSM food booth will be based at the Masonic Temple where there are tables to relax and have your lunch. There will also be a Trade-O-Ree set up at the Masonic Temple - be sure to visit it!
SATURDAY ACTIVITIES
ALL REGISTERED PARTICIPANTS
There will be a lot of activity going on in Washington Park, downtown Ottawa. Be sure to visit our Pioneering stations - go up the climbing wall, and down the zip line, check out the tower, the monkey bridge - and see how you fare with these activities! Come to the craft session, make a souvenir button, etc. Saturday activities will culminate with an afternoon parade walk to Ottawa Avenue Cemetery and a visit to the W. D. Boyce gravesite which all participants are expected to attend. (Unit & American Flags for the parade!) Lineup will begin on the north side of Washington Park at a time to be announced. NOTE: ALL PARTICIPANTS SHOULD PLAN TO MARCH IN THE PARADE TO HONOR W. D. BOYCE - that‚s the reason for the weekend! You may want to have a vehicle near the end of the parade route, on Ottawa Avenue (NOT in the cemetery) to pick up your parade walkers after the memorial service.
2008 HISTORY TRAIL
The 2008 Founder's Weekend Trail Committee is going to offer a special Ottawa History Trail in 2008!
(THIS IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH OUR 3 PERMANENT, YEAR-ROUND HIKING TRAILS OR OUR NEW GEOCACHING TRAIL INTRODUCED IN 2003 - IT IS A DIFFERENT TRAIL AND WILL ONLY BE HIKED ON SATURDAY, JUNE 14, 2008!.)
Participants who sign up for the trail will receive a ticket at the registration booth (Masonic Temple). The ticket is presented to the Trail Booth on the lawn at Reddick‚s Mansion (north side of Washington Park) and they will give you a trail pamphlet with instructions. When you complete the trail pamphlet, you must return the pamphlet to the trail booth at Reddick‚s (where you started) and they will present you with your patch. Cost of this activity is $3.00, which includes the brochure and patch (upon completion of the trail).
TRADE-O-REE
A Trade-O-Ree will be set up at the Masonic Temple on Saturday, June 14, 2008. The Trade-O-Ree is a terrific place to check out scouting memorabilia at its finest. You will have an opportunity to see a lot of collectibles - maybe you have some at home!! Here, you will be able to get an idea of what your personal collection may be worth! Wonderful place to spend some time and see what‚s new and cool on the collecting scene!
GATHERING OF EAGLES
It seems only fitting and proper that Eagle Scouts as well as Golden Eaglets (Girl Scout equivalent) from across the nation lead by example and should present themselves to the FRONT of the parade lineup.
REFUND POLICY
This event is scheduled to take place - rain or shine. Refunds will only be made if OSM cancels the entire event - that‚s never happened! If you register and are unable to attend, you may request your segment patch be mailed to you. Said request must be made within seven days after the event. If you fail to request the patch mailed to you within that time frame, you will forfeit your opportunity for such request. The Mystery Trail requires actual completion to earn the patch.
